US to help search for missing VN soldiers
HA NOI — Viet Nam and the US yesterday signed the first Memorandum of Understanding on co-operation in the first-of-its-kind project to increase Vietnamese capacity to locate and identify Vietnamese soldiers miss-ing since the American War.
The programme aims to strengthen the scientific and technical capacity of Vietnamese Government institutions and improve the ability of local authorities to locate, identify and document Vietnamese soldiers who went missing during the war.
The US will provide Viet Nam with technical assistance including training, information and experience exchange, provision of equipment and transfer of advanced technology for locating and identifying missing Vietnamese soldiers.
Goodwill
At the signing ceremony between the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs (MoLISA) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Deputy Minister of MoLISA Nguyen Thanh Hoa said the co-operation in this area reflected the good will of the two countries, and that the US and Viet Nam would continue to further promote efforts to collaborate in the areas of social and humanitarian assistance.
US Ambassador to Viet Nam Michael Michalak said this new activity came at an opportune time, as Viet Nam and the United States were celebrating the 15th anniversary of normalised diplomatic relations. "We are encouraged to see the increased mutual under-standing and trust between our two nations," he said.
The two-year project has a total budget of US$1 million.
There are still hundreds of thousands of unidentified graves of war martyrs in Viet Nam and an equal number of Vietnamese soldiers remain missing. — VNS
